The true value of portrait photography: A MUST READ!!!

A few days ago a photographer posted this letter from one of her clients, since then the letter has went viral and a lot of photographers are sharing this with their clients. Please take the time to read this letter, it will definately make you think and touch your heart:

July 2nd, 2011

Jeanine -

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons. I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind. I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby. I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family. After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you.. Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.

That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.

On Sunday I called and cancelled our session. Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip. This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things. My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor. It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly. I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice. It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.

I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me. The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them. Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it. If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth. I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.

My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos. I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.

I am still screening for two female models for a national magazine cover, we are looking for children who are comfortable in front of the camera but very nature minus the "cheese smiles" and posed looks. Must be able to follow direction, this is very critical.
This magazine is very diverse so we would love to have Hispanic, Asian, and Indian girls submit for consideration. Child does not have to be a professional model, we actually like working with children who have never modeled before. Again this casting is for GIRLS ONLY our boy model has already been cast.

Closing the Doors: Our World Children's Photography

After about 6yrs of doing business as a portrait photographer, I have decided to close the doors to Our World Contemporary Children's Photography and put all my attention and dedication into Tonya Dailey Photography, Tonya Dailey Headshots and starting my modeling agency. My journey as a photographer actually started off as lifestyle/journalist photographer, and somehow I got drawn into doing a lot of portrait photography. My decision was actually an easy one, because my true passion is lifestyle photography and also my editorial/commercial work. I just feel that I am limited and not able to be creative when working with portrait clients, being that most people are still into traditional style portraits.

I will continue to take portrait jobs and accept all gift certificates until August of 2012, I do have several clients that have been with me longer than 3yrs and I will continue working with those families being that I have creative freedom with them. Starting September of 2012 I will only take commissioned jobs from families who are looking to have lifestyle & photojournalist style photography taken of their children and families.

For those still looking for the traditional style photographer, I do network with some awesome photographers who are wonderful at what they do and extremely professional.

The Logo: Lifestyle Lessons

I just woke up this morning to my super cute logo for my online mentoring classes that will start up in mid October or early November. I wanted a logo that was really simple and not over the top, I am a simple photographer and like to keep things pleasing to the eye and not too flashy. So I was excited that Divian Connor was able to understand my vision for my logo and execute it. I have also started the facebook fan page for the class and will be posting a lot of helpful information about the world of photography. I am also thinking about breaking the class down into two parts, a class for parents who would just like to get better exposure, and another class for those who want to venture into professional photography and learn everything. Also note that this mentoring class will not teach the business side of photography, this is only a beginners class for learning how to use your camera, and how to shoot different photography styles (when dealing with the child market). Lifestyle Lessons: A Beginner's Photography Workshop

Looking to enhance your skills as a professional photographer or a parent who wants to take better pictures of your little ones?

Well I am proud to announce my upcoming online photography mentoring class, “Lifestyle Lessons”. The two week course is a beginner's course and will teach the fundamentals of photography. Students will learn to shoot in manual mode and how to take stunning images in natural light (indoors/outdoors). The course will also cover various shooting styles such as editorial, commercial, boutique, portrait & charity photography. This course is for those looking to learn how to shoot clean photography with minimum retouching. The class size will be between 10-15 students at a time, and open to individuals 16yr+. Once the course is over students will have access to the forum to gain more knowledge and ask additional questions. I will also offer private skype or phone sessions to critique each students work and help them in areas of difficulty.

The course will be offered to individuals living 50+ miles outside of Houston, Texas. Lifestyle lessons is perfect for parents who are looking to take better pictures of their children, teenagers who are interested in photography as a career, hobbyist, boutique owners who would like to learn the basics of photography and shoot their own products, & mommies who shoot for boutiques and want to take their images to the next level.

For the first month I will be offering mentoring classes at an introductory rate of $175.00 to the first 20 students. The rate will increase to $250.00 for the next 6 months and the regular rate afterwards will be $375.00. Photo Exhibit: New Faces of Fashion

A year before I actually put this exhibit together I ran across a beautiful little girl on a mommy forum who had down syndrome. I contacted her mother and extended my services to her and asked if I could come to her home and photograph her daughter. While working with her I just keep thinking how much personality this child had and how she should be modeling for some big company. These children are no different than any other child, except they have an extra chromosome. That is when I called my publicist to spread the word and I started casting children for the shoot.

The exhibit was hosted by BMW Momentum and the images were displayed on their showroom floor. I also joined with Father's Joy a non-profit Christian organization that provides support and information to parents with children with disabilities. I did this exhibit back in March a few days before World Down Syndrome Day. I was also interviewed by a local radio station, and it was featured on the news. Since doing this exhibit I am on a personal mission to get more children with down syndrome into the world of modeling.

I have been working with a wonderful couture hat designer La Couture Amore. Stephanie the owner/designer is beyond talented, her designs are jaw dropping and stunning. This is a shoot with did with an adorable 7 day old baby. We traveled to Huntsville Texas to work with this cutie. This is her latest styles, the stunning Grace Kelly baby bonnet, and Willow Nest.

To be a part of the birthday club you must become a member a month before your child's birthday, this is to ensure that they are able to be added to the calendar. Our calendar books fast so we want to make sure we are able to accommodate of birthday kids. Child Model: Giavanna Evangelina Papasavvas aka Gigi

Parents are constantly searching the web, studying blogs, and purchasing how to books, looking for clues on what it takes to successfully gain entry into the world of child modeling. If I had a dollar for every time a parent asked me how to get their child a break, I'd be writing this entry from my studio apartment in Italy, instead of my office in Houston, TX. The road to success was slightly different for my child model of the month, Giavanna Evangelina Papasavvas , also known as Gigi. Her mother Barbara Papasavvas -Froelich, began getting approached by industry insiders when her daughter was just a baby, but admits that she waited until she was at least 4 years old, so she could make sure Gigi actually enjoyed modeling. ( Nice Job Mom!) She is now signed with three agencies out of California, Zuri Model & Talent for print work, Greene and Associates Talent Agency for commercial & theatrical projects, and Abram's Artists for commercial.

You can see my model of the month in the Lady Antebellum music video for "American Honey", and that is just the beginning. The 9 year old beauty who despite being an in demand model still enjoys her childhood, has her family to thank for keeping her grounded. When she is not working she begins her day with a horseback ride and admitted to loving yogurt and sushi.

She even enjoys Spongebob and my all time favorite, CSI. After looking into her stunning eyes, it's easily noticeable that she enjoys being a kid and that's the most important part of the industry. Even at the age of 9 she knows that she can't lose who she is. As I applaud her from Houston, all I can say is Go GiGi., Go. And she is surely on her way.

I would like to thank Barbara for taking the time out of her and Gigi's busy schedule and sharing their story of success. Looking forward to seeing Gigi on the big screen real soon!!!!

Yummy photo shoot!!!!

I was contacted by a magazine that caters to modern families that enjoys fun time in the kitchen and healthy eating habits. I was asked to come up with a concept that centered around a child making chocolate covered strawberries. I had the perfect child for this shoot (Miss "B" she was the little girl from the lip gloss bribe video), and found out from mom that she LOVED strawberries and chocolate. So I knew this shoot was going to be very interesting, being that the model was only 3yrs old and it was going to be mighty hard to get her to cooperate and not eat all the products. But to our surprise she did very very well for a child of her years, and gave us a good sixty minutes worth of work. The shoot was a huge success and the client was EXTREMELY happy with the outcome of the pictures. I am happy to say that our little model will not only grace one issue of the magazine but two. And after talking to the editor it looks like they are wanting to work with me on future issues. I am very excited about this and can't wait to do more work with this publication.

Life of a Child Photographer: Video Moments

I always talk about how much fun I have on photo shoots, but now I have started to take advantage of my iphone 4 and start video recording some of the outtakes and the funny things that go on during these shoots. I started a youtube channel, and will be uploading video there for everyone to enjoy. Here is one of our videos from the SB Design shoot, we just love all the kids we work with and the parents who are so down to earth and supportive.

Casting Call

Behind the Scenes:Child Model Magazine Editoral Shoot

I was so excited when Child Model Magazine contacted me to shoot an editorial spread for their 2010 holiday issue. I had the pleasure of meeting three new models and their families and have to say I have some really great new friends now. It was also great to work with some of my veteran models, its always a joy working with them from time to time on assignments.
The shoot was a great success and we had a blast shooting in the woods even though it was 90 degrees, and we had to deal with huge bugs and mosquitoes.

Maybe we should have did a commercial shoot for OFF...lol

Sibling Love

I feel so bad because it's been a while since I lasted blog, I have been so busy with the kids, school, and trying to brand my name that I been neglecting my blog. But I am going to try and post at least once a twice a week starting today!!!

I am starting this week off with a two siblings I photographed over the weekend, they traveled two hours to work with me and I am so honored that mom thinks so highly of my work to make the drive. These kids were a joy to work with, and their love for one another was just beautiful...

Product: Revival Vintage Design

I found this adorable vintage site while surfing the net and had to email the designer and get an interview!! I love the idea that the fabric Helga uses is either recycled or vintage, she shops at vintage fairs and markets and finds some really fantastic pieces. Helga also shops around at thrift stores, and basically goes anywhere where people are clearing out old stuff that they no longer need.

Helga states, "People throw out so much beautiful fabric and I try and give it a new lease of life."

Helga sells pillows made from vintage fabrics, animals, accessories, elephants, and hearts filled with organic lavender. Everything is made from vintage and recycled fabric making Revival eco friendly.

I wanted to know a little more about Revival Vintage Design, like who they catered to and a little more about her products:

What type of products do you sell?

Motivation is a process in my world, I love vintage clothes and fabric and started using vintage fabric in my home decor line and then I wanted find something to do with the smaller pieces of beautiful fabric and a friend of mine suggested I make animals and when I realized that vintage was also eco friendly as I am recycling everything I thought it was a good idea. I think that the word 'recycle' has a bit of image around it that is a bit hippy and dull I want to change peoples views and make recycling a colorful and beautiful world. If we can start our children off with eco friendly toys they will always look after this planet.

Who do you cater to? home decor/children/etc etc

I cater to everyone, I have beautiful pillows for your sofa or your kids room or nursery, I have a whole nursery and baby range. I sell animals that are bought by everyone, for baby showers ( I know two have just been sent to Japan for a shower there) and for grandmas and everyone in between, my daughter gave one to her best friend as a graduation pressie and it is going off to college this September. All my animals are unique I try never to make two the same, that makes them special. My accessories make great gifts and prices range from $5.00 so it does not have to be a big occasion sometimes just a little gift to remind people you care is the best.

Meet Miss "K", she is no stranger to the world of modeling and should look familiar to a lot of people. She has modeled for Ralph Lauren and also has shoot for Gap Kids for five seasons. I was thrilled when her mom contacted me letting me know that they were visiting the area and she wanted me to photograph her daughter.
She was so easy to work and such a outgoing child, I look forward to working with her again this time when I visit California !!! Also be on the lookout Miss "K" will be our featured model in the coming months!!!

I am very excited about a shoot I will be doing next week, the model is from California and she is a very familiar face in the children's apparel industry. She has modeled for Ralph Lauren, and she is a regular Gap Kids model. I was so honored that her mom thinks so highly of my work that she wants me to photograph her daughter while there are in the area visiting family.

Picture Day ... What Should My Child Wear?!?!?

The main question I get from parents before shoots is, “what should my child wear?” I always tell parents to stay away from busy prints and logos, because this will take away from your child. You want the main focus to be on your child, not the over sized bright logos or cartoon character of their shirts. Now you can still dress your child in the cute vintage tees like the ones at gap kids or tees with limited graphics, for example something like this is cute and will not take away from your child on picture day:

But you want to stay away from shirts like the one below (again cute for playtime, not picture day), because your eyes are immediately drawn to the huge logo and away from the subject (the child):

When shooting infants, I tell parents to stay away from, “big kid clothing”, like blue jeans, and those huge puffy dresses. Don't get me wrong clothes like that are cute, but its not great for picture day. You want picture day to be about the new additional to your family, and by dressing them like a “big boy” or “big girl” takes away from that newborn look.

Infants look adorable in cute onesies, baby gap has a large selection of clothes that will work for that special day. If you are looking for something other than a onesis, Baby Gap has a really cute kimono set for infants, they come in several colors.

And for the parent looking to add a little color POP to their baby's pictures check out their adorable graphic onesis.

"A few years ago, I began to get a lot of business in the realm of children's pageants. It wasn't something I pursued, but rather something that just sort of came my way and was a good fit for the type of photography I do. Around the same time, I made a few contacts with children's boutique owners. Many boutique owners are home-based, stay--at-home moms (just like me) who have turned their passion for children's fashion into a viable business, mostly with online websites of their own or through cooperative sites like etsy. And in the course of my job, I'm always meeting other professional photographers. As my contact and client list in all of these areas grew, it just made sense to offer a service that would bring them all together."

Family & Business Life

We wanted to know more about the owner of Ellie Bean & Models and find out about her family and business life. Check out the interview we had with Alexi Killmer:

Besides Ellie Bean what is your other profession?

"I founded Child Essence Photography in 2004 when we were still living in our little 2-bedroom apartment in the Norwood Park neighborhood in Chicago. At the time, it was a way to indulge my love of photography and, at the same time, be at home with our then newborn twin boys. My husband was just starting his career as a police officer and it was also a way I could contribute to our family's income."

We call Alexi superwoman because not only does she run two businesses, but she is also a wife, and mother of twin boys and a little girl, her company Ellie Bean & Models is named after her daughter.

What is an average day like for in your household?

"Average? What's that? No two days are the same for me. But typically, a day might include two or three (or more, depending on the season) photo shoots, answering e-mails for both my photography and model businesses, updating social media for both businesses, returning phone calls, setting up appointments for shoots, editing photos, and packaging and sending out orders. Of course, in between all of that, I'm taking and picking up my twin boys from school, taking care of my baby girl, attending t-ball or soccer games, grocery shopping, taking the kids to doctor appointments, making meals, and trying to squeeze in a bit of time with my husband, who is a Chicago police officer. He works a crazy schedule as well, so it's a match made in Heaven!"

When it comes to business travels, Alexi packs up the whole family and turn it into a family affair. This is one of the perks to being a photographer, you can turn your business trip into a mini vacation and not lose their quality time with your family.

Alexi, how do you handle business life and raising a family?

"It's not always easy, that's for sure! But I wouldn't have it any other way. Since starting my photography business, we've moved to a single-family home that offers me the space for an office and studio. Since it is in the same space as our family room and the kid's playroom, I often work while engaging with my family at the same time. I feel very blessed to be able to do that and it's definitely not something I take for granted. I'm definitely a champion multi-tasker. Some days are chaotic, some days go more smoothly than others. Like I mentioned before, no two days are the same. Because of the nature of my business, I have the luxury of being able to take my kids to work with me. I sometimes travel for photo shoots and we use those opportunities for "mini" family vacations. For instance, I'm currently booking photo shoots in Baltimore, Maryland and the Jersey Shore, and my husband and the kids are coming with me. I'm very lucky to have a great support network of family and friends who help me. My husband handles household tasks a lot, I have many family members and neighbors who babysit when necessary, and my mom writes copy for my websites. It's definitely often a family affair."

I really enjoyed talking with Alexi, she is so sweet and a great friend to know. I wish her nothing but great success with Ellie Bean & Models, and her photography business.

Maternity Session

This expectant mother and her husband came to me as a referral from a dear friend ( I love referrals and give out great referral gifts). I have to say that this couple was beyond sweet and I enjoyed working with them.

I have to say it was extremely hot and very crowded on this particular Sunday. There was an Astros game going on, the Houston bridal extravaganza, and Discovery Green had set up big screens for people to watch the FIFA World Cup game, but we still made it work and got some really great images.

Gotta love the iphone ultrasound picture, glad we thought about this because it came out to be an adorable picture, mom cried when she saw it. :-)

Taylor Dior...A Star is Born

From the first time I saw Taylor on myspace when she was just an infant I knew she was going to be a star; this child has a smile that would light up a room and a personality out of this world. Only three years old Taylor has done countless ads for companies like Children's Place & Target, and also played Notorious BIG's daughter in the hit movie, Notorious.

Her mother Chavon, has taken time out of her busy schedule to talk about her daughter's career and shine light on the world of child modeling. I would like to thank Chavon again for giving her time and allowing us to step into her daughter's world.

How did your child get started in modeling/acting? When was her first big break and your reaction? Taylor got her start with a talent management company in NJ. We sent her pics in, were called in for an interview, and started getting sent out on castings ever since. We learned about the company because Taylor’s dad had other family members who modeled/acted with them. Her big break came at 15 mths of age when her manager called and said she booked a feature film with award winning Hollywood actors. She was chosen to play the Notorious BIG’s daughter in the film Notorious. Our reaction was immense shock. We expected to see our babygirl in print ads not the big screen! We were happy and thought we were dreaming until we stepped on set and were face to face with people we only saw on tv/movies before. The film hit theaters nationwide in 2009!

What is daily life like with Taylor (her routine, school, activities she is in, etc etc)? How do you manage her career and motherhood/family life? Taylor attends preschool Wed-Fri. On Saturdays she has gymnastics and swimming classes. Sat night-Tues is daddy and daughter day! She travels from NY and NJ every week and enjoys the best of both worlds! When her agent or manager calls us for a job or audition, her dad, a family member, or myself gets her into the city. We are VERY blessed to have supportive family members and close friends who help out whether its picking her up from school, driving her around the city, or entertaining her until I get off work. Besides modeling and acting, Taylor enjoys learning! She has been reading since the age of 2. She also loves learning how to spell different words, putting puzzles together, and writing. Gymnastics is her ultimate favorite physical activity.

What are some major campaigns/movies Taylor has been featured in? Taylor has worked for The Children’s Place, Target, Joe Fresh (major Canadian retailer), Amway Global, Bonnie Jean dresses, Pelaez Productions, Lance Armstrong Livestrong commercial, and Feature film Notorious. Taylor has been featured in NY’s “Daily News” Newspaper, Hip Hop Weekly Magazine pictured in between Ciara and Rihanna, and Jadakiss’ music video “Letter to BIG”.

What are some of the major projects currently in the works for Taylor? From age 2-3 Taylor only did print work. But now at age 3.5 she’s now ready to get back into film/commercial/tv. She recently began going on commercial auditions again and hopes to book very soon! She has a meeting with one of NY and LA’s top talent agencies in July 2010 and if luck is on her side, she will sign with them and hopefully be on her way to doing what she enjoys…entertaining and being fabulous!

How do you deal with the negativity that comes with being the mother of a child star? I have learned to have thick skin and take what people say as a compliment. You should only worry yourself when people arent talking about you anymore, that’s how I see things now. I know that behind every successful person lies a pack of nay sayers. The more time I put into addressing negativity that comes our way, the less time I’m able to give to my family. We will continue to do what we do because the people who mind don’t matter and the people who matter don’t mind.

There are so many parents who are dying to know, “how do I get my kids into the business” what information can you share with them about how to get started and connecting with the right people? Yes, I get this question daily. Because of that, I put together a note that identifies the key steps in getting started. Its very specific to the NY area market, however. For all other areas, find out what the top agencies in your area are by searching online, visit their site, and see how they accept submissions. Submit the required documentation (usually photos) and hopefully they are interested in meeting you! Families must understand that it is very time consuming and can get costly (tolls, gas, parking garages, food, outfits, professional photos for older kids, and acting classes for older children. Also understand that there is NO need to pay anyone upfront to represent your child. Agents and Managers only get paid when they get you a job (% commission). Interview with Renee Lauren; Click Models

This is an interview I ran a few months ago on my old blog and felt that it would be beneficial to post it again on the new blog; for our new readers who are interested in getting their children into the world of modeling.
Renee has been like a mentor to me over the years and given me great advice about the modeling industry and how it works. She is the agency director for a very well known modeling agency, Click Models. She runs the Philadelphia office and she also has a modeling site and book with a wealth of information on child modeling.

Tonya's Interview with Renee Lauren of:

Tonya: Renee can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the modeling industry?
Renee: Hello Tonya, yes I started as a model then opened a small agency and later merged with Click Model Management in New York.

Tonya: What is the first step parents should take to get their kids into modeling?
Renee: First thing we always tell parents is to take a few digitals of their child to see if they like being in front of the camera, then practice with them a few days just taking fun snapshots trying different expressions and settings.

Tonya: Does Click Models represent children?
Renee: Click Models only represents children with the Philadelphia office and the division is very small so it is usually preferred that the child has experience.

Tonya: What big name companies have your models worked for?
Renee: We book models for the top clients, Abercrombie, Macy's, Target, Kenneth Cole, Seventeen Magazine, Glamour Magazine.

Tonya: Being that Texas doesn't have a huge market for children like Florida or California, what advice would you give Texas parents who want to pursue a modeling career for their child? Is relocating to one of the larger markets really necessary?
Renee: No we don't recommend that you move from state to state for booking work unless it is really what the child wants to do and you have the resources and money to do so. There are several good agencies in Texas that have small children's divisions. Most agencies like the talent to live within 50 miles of the agency for castings and bookings.

Tonya: What advice would you give pageant moms who want their daughters to model? How would they start to separate pageant modeling from commercial modeling?
Renee: Oh we luv the pageants we just had one of our girls who went all the way to placing third in Miss Universe. Yes you must keep the photos separate, modeling photos should be more lifestyle, editorial as pageant photos are much more posed and theatrical with the costumes and makeup. You can not have all the makeup and hair styles that are represented in your pageant photos work for your modeling photos they are not natural enough.

Tonya: I know parents approach you a lot saying that they have really cute kids, and everyone tells them their kid should model. But in all honesty what does a modeling agency really look for in a child? Does talent and personality play a huge role over looks?
Renee: You never can tell, we may be looking for a look that we don't represent at the time, a certain age a client is looking for that matches a size for shoot we are casting. You just never know what the call is going to be for. Correct, it is not always about looks sometimes it is a certain smile or expressions the child has.

Tonya: Is it best for parents to submit snapshots or professional headshots of their children to the agencies?
Renee: It is always best to submit snapshots unless you have done a professional shoot then of course submit those with a few snapshots but the agencies will always want to see snapshots of your child for personality and how natural and comfortable they are. Then they will look to the professional photos for how well they photograph.

Tonya: When picking a photographer is it best to use the agency referred photographer or can parents use someone else? And if they go with someone else what should the parent watch out for as far as image quality?
Renee: Most agencies will give you a list from anywhere from 3 - 5 photographers that they like working with but they will also offer you the opportunity to work with whoever you would like if they are good photographers.

Tonya: What scams should parents be aware of?
Renee: If an agency does not offer you the opportunity to work with a photographer that you like and insists that you work with their photographer for an outrageous amount of money. Modeling agencies should never take money for photography sessions unless it is a school or training classes. Modeling agencies are paid by commissions from bookings they get for you.

Tonya: I know you have a book out for parents who want their kids to get into modeling, how can they purchase that book?
